01 — Indoors & Orchard
Most house plants are dormant now and need less water — but don't stop watering altogether. Follow the golden rule: water only once the soil turns dry. In peak winter, once every 10 days is usually enough.
A diluted liquid feed of fermented cow dung works wonderfully at this time — it's like warm wine for plants. This is also a good time to plant grapes; existing vines should be pruned now. Apply manure to all fruit trees, especially mango.
02 — Indoors
Protect indoor plants from frost by keeping them under cover at night, and try to hold a stable room temperature. Most house plants struggle with sudden shifts — heater warmth and cold drafts from doors and windows both stress them. The key to a healthy indoor jungle is consistency, not warmth alone.
03 — Flowering
Roses are in full bloom — enjoy them, but remove wilted flowers regularly.
Dahlias need plenty of sunlight.
Chrysanthemums should be selected and prepared for next season now — cut back to about 6 inches from the ground and tag them. New suckers will emerge soon.
04 — Bulbs
Winter bulbs are in full bloom. When first planted, bulbs need very little water since they store their own moisture — once flowering begins, water only as the soil turns dry. Ranunculus (butter rose) and lilliums remain firm favourites this month.
