Tip 1: Feed different things in different places
- Parrots and Doves like bajra, and many ants to eat at the same time. So, these should be enough ledge space for them to perch on, while feeding.
- Silver Bills and White eyes like to feed in bushes, where they feel protected. They like to eat ‘Kangani’ so make sure to give them a separate feeding station where they feel protected.
- Bulbuls like left over fruit. Use the bottom of a papaya or watermelon, after leaving a bit of the flesh on it and leave it on an open tray. Come back later to find several beak marks in the fruit.
- Parrots are fans of black sunflower seeds. Hang them in a feed silo in the garden and you can (almost) count on them to report.
- And almost all birds and squirrels love peanuts and Sunflower seeds.
- Crows are happy to eat anything left over. We have a separate feeding station for the crows. We put the food out at the same time every day, and sure enough, they are always waiting for it.
- Eagles and Kites are fed leftover meat and chicken bones on the terrace.
- At night, meat can be left out for the owls.
Tip 2: water
In the morning, place a low bowl of fresh water for the birds to drink and bathe in. Its best done in a terracotta basin, so the water remains cool in the summer.
Tip 3: Placement
Important to place the bird baths and feeders where one can get a good view of these, but it’s also important to put these in a place where the Birds feel protected.
Tip 4: Patience
Bird news network travels slowly but surely. It will start with no birds, and then just a couple… and then once word spreads, these will be dozens of birds on your feeders. Its best to put out just a handful of bird seed in and around the feeder. And be Patient. Do it consistently every day and watch. They are sure to come. We live in an urban jungle with a shortage of food for the birds.
